Why "Save Water"?

Fresh water is a precious natural resource. With the increase in population and rapid development of society, global water consumption has kept growing. This, coupled with the impact of climate change, presents mankind with the grave challenge of water shortage. Everybody shares the responsibility to conserve water, so as to ensure a sustainable use of valuable water resources.

Water Conservation Starts from You

Every drop of fresh water is precious resource on the Earth. Just a little change to our daily habits can help a lot. Let us think before turning on the water taps.

Making Smart Choices to Reduce Virtual Water

We can reduce water consumption by making smart choices in purchase and transportation and wisely consuming food/products that require less water for production without wastage. For example, we can eat more vegetables and less meat as the production of vegetables uses much less "virtual water" than meat. A kilogram of lettuce uses only 130 litres of "virtual water" for its production, which is less than a kilogram of beef that requires 15,455 litres of "virtual water" for its production.

E-game

Through the game “Water Use Habits” showing both good and bad water use habits to strengthen our awareness of water conservation.

Workplace Water Efficiency

Water can also be saved in the workplace with a little forethought and planning. In particular, catering and hotel industries is a trade with a high share of water consumption. Restaurant and hotel practitioners can achieve "Zero Waste" by making reference to Best Practice Guidelines (BPG) containing several operational water saving measures in their daily operation. They can also conduct water audits regularly using the Water Efficiency Checklist which aims to evaluate the water use performance of equipment and operational practices, identify maintenance requirements and gauge staff attitude toward water conservation with a view to enhancing water efficiency.

Proactive Water Leakage Management

Leakage from the water mains in buildings can waste a lot of water. Property owners and building management agents have duties and incentives to repair and keep good maintenance of these private water mains to avoid leakage. Education of Young Generation

It is important to nurture a water conservation culture amongst the younger generation and establish a sustainable water-saving lifestyle. Parents and teachers can educate children and students the importance of using precious water resource wisely as well as encourage them to participate in water conservation campaigns and education programmes. Teachers can use the education materials prepared by Water Supplies Department (WSD) to teach students on how to conserve water at schools and home.

A new Water Resources Education Centre (H2OPE Centre) has been commissioned. Parents and teachers (schools can make guided tour reservations) can visit with their children and students to learn about the importance of water conservation through exhibits, live demonstrations and interactive games.

"Important role that each and every one of us can play in preserving our sustainable future"

Ensuring a sustainable and resilient future for our environment, including the water resources, is critical. It’s a responsibility that’s bigger than any individual or organisation, but when we all work together to conserve water and pay attention to our environment, we can achieve our goal.
